Dental Exams and Cleanings

Eliminating dental health issues before they become problematic is the goal of our practice. Preventative dentistry is used to describe dental procedures like cleaning and exams that provide preventative maintenance to your overall oral health.  Just like cars needing oil changes and tire rotations, preventative dentistry can help you avoid costly dental procedures further down the road.
What is covered during a dental exam?

A comprehensive dental exam will be performed by your dentist at your initial dental visit.  At regular check-up exams, your dentist and your hygienist will include the following:

Examination of diagnostic DIGITAL x-rays: X-rays are essential for finding deficiencies with your oral health.  These areas include tooth decay, oral lesions, cysts, and bone loss. Lockport Dental Group has invested in Digital Technology that greatly reduces radiation exposure and is much more diagnostic.
Oral cancer screenings: We will check the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer.
Gum disease evaluation: We will check your gums and bone surrounding your teeth for any signs of periodontal disease.
Examination of tooth decay: We will check all tooth surfaces for tooth decay and cavities.
Examination of existing restorations: We will check all current dental restorations for clinical acceptance.

What is covered during a dental cleaning?

Professional dental cleanings (dental prophylaxis) are performed in office by our Registered Dental Hygienists.  Your cleaning appointment will include a dental exam and the following:

Removal of tarter (calculus): Tooth tarter is hardened plaque that has been left on the tooth for an extended time and is now attached to the tooth surface.  Tarter forms above and below the gum line and can only be removed with special dental instruments.
Removal of plaque: Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on your teeth.  It is a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva.  The bacteria produces toxins that inflame the gums.  This inflammation is the start of periodontal disease.
Teeth polishing: Remove stain and plaque that is not otherwise removed during brushing and scaling.
